'grown up' summer and fenway fancies

status check - delighted
background ambiance - phone messages re: phish

when i was younger, i couldn't imagine summer as a full-fledged adult. as a child, summer was meant for playing and relaxing - no cares in the world other than summer ball and the like. once i hit working age, summer meant shifts at mcdonald's - working a night shift, hanging out with my little disfunctional group until 2 or 3 a.m., going home, sleeping until noon. once college hit, it was work, save money and take short road trips for concerts until i was able to return 'home' to my collegiate family.

even last summer, my first summer as a collegiate graduate, was marked by a sense of 'what now?' things were still in transition.

this summer finds our heroine experiencing the sensation of being settled for the first time. i've got the job, the apartment (granted, that's changing in 13 days, but still) and the realization that summer is a warm series of workdays and weekends, not the break in action it has previously been.

to my surprise, however, i'm digging grown up summer. meeting up with friends for brunch or lunch and laughing beneath the shade of a patio umbrella. watching people walk by on church street and realize that this stretch of businesses is my area - after years of collegiate wishes that i had the time to be on church street, i'm now there every day.

the anticipation of events to come - concerts, minitrips, baseball games and the like - and the happiness of knowing that i have a group of people around me whose company i enjoy - and who, in turn, enjoy my company. knowing i can always stop by nectar's for a drink or a concert without having anything else i need to do that night, knowing that i'll spend most of my workdays writing something interesting and learning something new.

this summer will be one of the first that won't serve as a break - instead it's a continuation. and i'm looking forward to it.
---------
in other news. my first fenway game of the season - sunday's vermont day - against toronto! ignoring the fact that i'm driving to boston tomorrow, to vermont friday, then back to boston this weekend (at least then i'll be able to curl up in the backseat and sleep). i'm too excited about my first game of the season to care.

James Dean museum opens in Indiana
an Associated Press report 5/17/04

GAS CITY, Ind. - A museum chronicling the short life of actor James Dean has opened along Interstate 69 in a spot its curator hopes can attract more fans of the "Rebel Without a Cause" star.

"This is a great thing for Gas City and Grant County," Gas City Mayor Larry Leach told about 60 people who attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for The James Dean Memorial Gallery. "It will definitely put us on the map as far as tourism goes."

The entrance of the art deco-style gallery is a gift shop stocked with postcards, coffee mugs, dolls and T-shirts featuring images of Dean, who died at age 24 in a 1955 car crash.

Other rooms showcase magazine covers, newspaper clippings, books, paintings, movie posters, collector plates and blankets featuring the actor.

Lifelike statues of Dean and fans' scrapbooks from the 1950s are also on display, as well as some items that belonged to the actor - including a class ring and a pair of Lee jeans.

The new museum about 50 miles southwest of Fort Wayne also houses a 35-seat theater that plays television appearances and early Hollywood screen tests.

The gallery was moved to Gas City from the movie star's hometown of Fairmount. Curator David Loehr has said he expects as many as 50,000 visitors each year.

thank you for lunch as well! had a lovely time. and the first summer post-college never counts - you're too busy reeling from the fact that you're not going back! (or maybe i just forgot about that summer - goodness, how could i? the o'neill and all? sheesh, i suck.)

and is it bad that i read the beginning of that article and immediately thought, "wait! what about fairmount?"

hahaha

ok, i will take your claim that the first summer doesn't count. i don't feel as old that way.

i'm very amused you knew where the museum was previously...i should not be suprised.

we're not old, we're spring chickens. only in late spring. like mid-may.

and yes, i'm a dope like that. i rarely forget things, particularly with the association of a crush attached (no comments about last week).

Hi There! How are you? Probably excited about the big trip to the city tomorrow? Cant say that I blame ya. Sounds like you are going to have a fun time. Wow you have alot of "anonymous" commenting today. I am the person who stumbled across your page on last Friday. Talked to you about the wedding. Who am I? Glad you asked. :) Just an average guy who has one of those "nightshift" jobs. Not glamourous but it helps with the bills. Assistant night manager in a grocery store. Dont yawn yet I am really not this boring! :) I came across your page looking for a friends page who has all her family geneology and what not on it. She happens to share your name. I clicked on your page cuz it sounded interesting in the description and I wasnt dissappointed. Enjoyed your summertime comments. You know one of the best things about being on a "working summer?" I no longer have to dread those back to school ads! :) Those tended to throw a damper on the August "gatherings" Seriously though thanks for the warm welcome. Hopefully soon enough I will get off my lazy butt and get a name going so you will know who you are talking too. :) Smile and have a great time tomorrow and over the weekend!

hey, great to hear from you! i am very, very much looking forward to the weekend of boston madness. it's one of my favorite places and i always have a grand time. and the mraz performance is icing on the cake (well, really it's the original reason i planned on a trip to boston, so i suppose that would really make it the cake of the cake, but it doesn't seem quite appropriate - mraz is more of an icing kind of thing. but i digress). so, long story short, i'm likely to be a happy poster when i return from my travels.

thank you for the kind words and thoughts - glad you're sticking around! talk to you soon. cheers.
